Elizabeth Lockwood
St George in the East, London
d. date unknown
Elizabeth Lockwood was the ninth of the 11 children born to John William Lockwood and Sarah Cuthbert. She was born October-December 1859 in St George in the East, London E1.
She was listed as living with her parents in the family home at the time of the 1861, 1871 and 1881 Census forms, and in 1891 was living with her mother and her mother’s grandson Edward Lockwood at 17 Philip Street. (NOTE: The handwritten entry had read “Eliz. Lockwood, 32” and had subsequently been wrongly transcribed as being aged 52.)
One year later, in
Elizabethmarried her former brother-in-law and became stepmother to her nephews and nieces. She had three children with William George Jerwood - James Jerwood (c1898), George Thomas Jerwood (c1900) and Saran Ann Jerwood [c1901]. According to the 1901 Census there were 11 persons in residence at 93 Hind Street, Poplar. They were William Jerwood (Head – 46), Elizabeth Jerwood (Wife – 42), their children William (23), Bella (19), Hannah (15), Alfred (13), Thomas (11), John (8), James (3), and George (1). The 11th person was named Edward Lockwood, aged 12, described as a Cousin.
There appears little doubt that he is the same Edward Lockwood described as being the “born about 1888” “Grandson of Sarah Lockwood in the 1891 Census. Sarah Lockwood was still alive in 1901, and her Census entry has her living with son John Lockwood and another grandchild, Grace Garnham.
parentage remains a mystery. Of
The most likely explanation is that he was Edward B Lockwood, born 1887/8, who was a grandson of John William Lockwood’s brother, Philip James Lockwood.
